  * For food-contact sacks, specify food-grade jute processed with vegetable batching oil (IJO 98/01).
  * Ask for fumigation or phytosanitary certificates for coir and jute goods.
  * Approve print colours on the real fabric, because natural fibre shade varies by lot.

### Where can I buy jute bags in India?

The Hooghly belt near Kolkata in West Bengal is the main source, with jute mills and bag makers for retail, promotional and wine bags.

### What are coir mats made from?

Coir mats are woven or tufted from coconut husk fibre, often with a latex or PVC backing. Alappuzha in Kerala is the main centre, and Alleppey Coir is GI-registered.

### Is jute more sustainable than cotton?

Jute grows fast with little irrigation and few chemicals, and it is fully biodegradable when unlaminated. It is coarser, so it suits bags and floor coverings rather than apparel.
