What a GI tag means for you.

A Geographical Indication is a registered name, protected in India under the Geographical Indications of Goods Act, 1999, that ties a product to the place and method that made it famous.

The name is protected: only registered producers and authorised users from the named region may use it.
Ask for the authorised-user certificate, or a letter from the registered proprietor, before you place an order.
GI protects the name and origin, not your design. Custom colours, sizes and packaging are usually welcome.
Many GI crafts are made by artisan groups and cooperatives, so plan for smaller batches and allow time for hand work.
