FCL vs LCL. Find the cheaper way to ship.
LCL (less than container load) shares a container and is charged per cubic metre or tonne, while FCL (full container load) is a flat price per container. Enter your volume, weight and quotes and this calculator shows the total cost of each option, the break-even volume and a cost chart.

Three steps. One clear answer.
- 01
Enter your shipment volume in cubic metres and its gross weight.
- 02
Enter LCL rates per W/M and fixed fees, and the all-in price of a 20′ and a 40′ container.
- 03
Read the lowest-cost option, the break-even CBM and the cost curve across volumes.
LCL cost = (ocean rate + origin + destination charges per W/M) × max(m³, tonnes, 1) + fixed origin and destination fees. FCL cost = number of containers × (all-in ocean rate + origin + destination charges per container), where the number of containers is set by practical loadable volumes of 28 m³ (20′) and 58 m³ (40′) and payloads of 28,200 kg and 26,700 kg. Break-even CBM is where the LCL cost equals one 20′, keeping your weight per cubic metre. LCL transit adds your extra days for consolidation and unpacking at the container freight stations.

anirudh@sourcesquid.coAt what CBM is FCL cheaper than LCL?
Often somewhere around 13 to 16 m³ for a 20′, but it depends on your lane and quotes. Enter your own rates and the calculator shows your exact break-even.
Why does LCL take longer than FCL?
LCL cargo is delivered to a container freight station, consolidated with other shipments, and unpacked again at destination before release. That usually adds several days at each end.
What are LCL destination charges?
Typically container freight station (CFS) handling, unpacking or deconsolidation, documentation and delivery order fees. They are charged per W/M plus fixed amounts, and can be a large share of the total on small shipments.
Should I use FCL even if the container is not full?
Often yes, once you pass the break-even. A part-full container also moves faster, is handled less and is sealed at the factory. Use the spare space to bring forward your next order if cash allows.
