What to ask for in the RFQ and check when goods arrive.

  • State the grey or ductile grade and ask for tensile test bars poured with each heat.
  • For ductile iron, request nodularity and microstructure reports.
  • Agree acceptance levels for porosity and sand inclusions on machined faces before production.

What is the difference between grey and ductile iron?

Grey iron has flake graphite, which makes it easy to machine and good at damping vibration. Ductile iron has spheroidal graphite, which makes it much stronger and tougher.

Which Indian cities are best for iron castings?

Kolhapur, Coimbatore, Rajkot, Batala and Belagavi have large iron foundry clusters, and Kolkata–Howrah has a long foundry tradition.

Can Indian foundries supply machined and painted castings?

Yes. Most export foundries machine, pressure-test and paint castings before shipping.
